Christina Fisanick Greer, Ph.D.
I have a PhD in writing from a major university, 20 years of university-level teaching experience (I am a tenured, associate professor of English at a mid-size university), and I am the author of 35 published books and numerous articles, many of which include research on memoir writing.
My memoir, Two-Week Wait: Motherhood Lost and Found, came out in February 2015.
My latest memoir, The Optimistic Food Addict: Recovering from Binge Eating Disorder, comes out in September 2016.
WHAT DO I DO? I specialize in teaching writers how to generate ideas by giving them powerful writing prompts and helping them move through tough places in their writing. I love working one-on-one with writers through email, Skype, and instructional videos and worksheets.
I also help people in recovery from binge eating disorder by helping them using writing in their healing process.
WHAT DO I LOVE? I like to help writers outline chapters and provide frames that can help them see each piece of their work and how it fits with the whole. Mostly, though, I love being part of the transformation writers undergo from the moment they begin writing until they finish their final draft. That transformation is amazing to me every single time.
WHAT EVENTS HAVE SHAPED ME? Given that I have struggled through many challenges in my life, including childhood trauma, sexual assault, the murder of my oldest child, the premature birth and death of my middle child, and a house fire that destroyed all of my possessions, I have many lessons I can share in small group workshop settings and in conference style presentations.
UNIQUE AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION? I am trained as a writing specialist, specifically non-fiction, including memoir. In addition to memoir writing, I also specialize in digital storytelling, which is another form of writing about the self that includes music and images.
I can give workshops and presentations on the following subjects:
- memoir writing
- digital storytelling
- public history
- oral history collection and presentation
- Appalachian culture and literature
- food addiction
- binge eating disorder
- body image
- vision board creation
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
- Shaken Baby Syndrome
- child loss
